This community-based, health promotion intervention for seniors was designed to provide a comprehensive review of how body-mind-spirit interaction impact wellness and lifestyle change. The 12-week curriculum offered sessions on exercise, nutrition, sexuality, leisure, stress management, cognitive behavioral therapy, forgiveness, and happiness. This study is undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of integrated health program for the elderly, entitled Body-Mind-Spirit (BMS). Seventy community-dwelling older adults aged over 60 were recruited at two community welfare centers and randomly assigned into experimental(n=32) and control(n=38) groups. In comparison with control group, BMS participants showed significant improvements in integrated health domain. In terms of physical health, the program was significantly effective in enhancing overall rating of health, activity levels, sleeping habit, knowledge on nutrition, and attitude toward sexuality. While no statically significant improvement in psychological health was found between pre-and-post measures, MBS participants reported significant improvements in spiritual health indicated by the levels in peace of mind, life satisfaction, and optimism about the future. Findings implied the importance of incorporating the holistic approach for older adults who perceived more integrative concepts of health promotion. More research is needed to effectively evaluate integrative health promotion programs, addressing the methodological challenges of randomized control trials.
